Pirate Radio Logs – May 28-29

Okay, I have been slacking hard with posting my logs here. I am going to my best to keep up tonight… Also, for a little blog bling here is a SSTV image from Radio Ga-Ga received last night at 0322 UT on 6925.

Captain Morgan Shortwave, 6924.5v AM, 2130 – great signal at tune-in, Albert Collin’s I Ain’t Drunk. Signal faded down quickly and remained at threshold level besides a few minor peaks, all blues music. Sounded like this was a repeat of Captain Morgan’s ‘Blues With a Bite’ show. Looks like he is off at 2212 UT.

WBNY Shortwave (tentative), 6900 AM, 2248 – decent carrier but audio is rather low at tune-in. Inc0gni0 on #pirateradio says he is hearing Commander Bunny.

Radio Ronin Shortwave, 6950.6v AM, *2343 – on with Stones’ Satisfaction interval signal, ID into Ram Jam, Head East, Buffalo Springfield old classics. Fair signal, nice modulation.

UnID, 6849.4 AM, 0012 – Could be M-A-C, relaying last week’s pirate radio special that was on AM radio, with Pat Murphy. Very low signal, getting better around 0045 to follow some of the audio. At 0105 the program content appears to have changed as I heard some Jay Smilkstein stuff on now. Still goinjg at 0200 but unfortunately at a very threshold level.

Outhouse Radio, 6926.14 AM, 0050 – Outhouse rocking the ionosphere with a Black Sabbath marathon! Very nice signal with Black Sabbath, The Wizard and more of the classics.. even Changes. Signal ended up fading out to barely audible!

UnID, 6925 USB, 0120 – Good signal except het from Outhouse. Played a bluegrass tune ‘Waterloo’ and gone, one and done!

WEAK Radio, 6930 USB, 0124 – by far the best signal of the night, WEAK at a S9+20 level with awesome modulation. Music by Bloc Party, The Sounds, System of a Down, Rose Tattoo and much more. Awesome!

Wolverine Radio, 6925 USB, 0300 – Nice signal from Wolverine, opening with usual Barenaked Ladies Testing 1,2,3. Tonight’s set is mostly oldie songs from Coasters, Louis Jordan and Little Richard. Lots more, good signal. Finishing up with Whats Love Got To DO With It and then a James Brown SSTV image at 0443.

Gumby Radio, 6930 USB, 0458 – awesome Gumby concept show! Tribute to Art Clokey and Gumbies TV debut in 1956 with monolgue of Art talking about LSD and Mescaline experiences. Bend Me, Shape Me song, Beatles and off at 0531 with “If you would like a QSL for this program, you probably need psychiatric help”. LOL

Radio Jamba International, 6899.85 AM, 0542 – Just when I thought the pirates had furled their sailed for the night, I find Kracker staying up late with a nice LIVE AM signal just below 6900 kHz. Song by Cake at 0545 then a shout out by Kracker mentioning my FRN report. Songs by the Doors, Zappa, and a RJI style public service warning about the dangers of music. Deep fade at 0605 during Riders on the Storm but I am going to stick with it for a while to see if it returns.

Wow, tons of activity tonight. Hopefully this is an indication of a lots of activity over the holiday weekend. Thanks to all the ops out there!

Pirate Radio Logs – May 10-11 + QSLs

Received an email from Andrew Yoder saying he was mailing out my copy of the Pirate Annual 2010 today!

Outhouse Radio, 6925.6 AM, *2301 – Outhouse Radio playing some blues and rock. Poor signal so far here in Memphis. Picking up a bit at 2350 with Monday, Monday then Play That Funky Music.

WHYP Shortwave, 6875.76 AM, after a few songs I’m not familiar with, female computer generated ID and mentioning James Brownyard. Gone at 2354, I hope JB didn’t smoke another resistor

UnID, 6955.27 AM, 0002-0004 – Unid station on the frequency for a few minutes playing a rock instrumental. An utility showed up and the broadcaster went QRT.

The Crystal Ship, 6875.9 AM, 0031 – tuned in to Little Red Rooster by the Doors, then Poet continuing with a Doors marathon. Moving into the Doors, the Who, Hendrix and other. Off the air at 0150.

WBNY, 6925 AM, 0118 – Bunny Radio on the air with MDA Telethon, playing songs for Monkeys, mentioning WBNY gear.

Wolverine Radio, 6876 USB 0200- showed up not too long after TCS signed off. Nice signal, pristine audio quality with all Doors songs, ID and off at 0209.

Pirate Radio Logs – May 9-10 + QSLs

Ragnar’s latest edition of the Pirate’s Week podcast is out! I had an early start this morning, and was able to catch the Voice of the Last DJ!

WLDJ Voice of the Last DJ, 6925 USB, *1356-1423* – nice signal this morning, playing old school rock like Hendrix, Bad Company, Foreigner and Dire Straits. Multiple ID’s by Krystal, the computer generated female voice announcer. Here is an audio clip of the ID at 1418 UT: ♫ clip. Thank you for the early morning broadcast!

WBNY Relay Service, 6899.6 AM, *1950-2222 – started off at threshold levels and slowly strengthening after 0000 UT. Relays of Pirate’s Week, Voice of Next Thursday, promos for WBNY hats and t-shirts. *Perseus Update* noted WBNY signing on at 1950 UT with threshold audio with deep fades. A few sudden strong peaks noted around 2017z with Pirate’s Week relay programming. Another nice peak at 2218z with Ragnar talking about Sealord’s awesome DX Engineering 4 Square antenna.

The Crystal Ship, 6876.04v, *2228-0310* – very nice signal from Poet this evening, starting off with a Ho Ho Ho & a Bottle of Rum interval signal, lot’s of Elvis tunes, Jerry Lee Lewis and many others. Almost a 5 hour marathon!

Radio Ronin Shortwave, 6950.4 AM, *2308-0110* – poor to fair signal, playing rocks tune by Blue Öyster Cult, the Animals, Bob Seger, Foghat, Billy Idol, multiple IDs. Off at 0110 with ID and email.

The Voice of KAOS, 6925 USB, *2323 – KAOS signing on with Get Smart theme a repeat broadcast of the Friday evening show. Weak signal but generally readable, het from presumed Outhouse on 6925.2 AM. Hold Your Head Up

Barnyard Radio, 6930 USB, *0049-0310* – Barnyard with blowtorch signal. Chuck Manson spinning heavy tunes by Manowar, Testament, Dead Kennedys, Slayer and much more. Here is a off-air recording of the first 50 minutes of the show:

Captain Morgan Shortwave, 6924.8v AM, *0119 – good signal from the Captain, playing tons of obscure old blues tunes, excellent show.

Coyote Radio CYOT, 6950.4 AM, 0134 – Mr. Announcer spinning oldies, wishing a happy Mothers Day. Rather poor signal this evening.

Outhouse Radio, 6925 USB, 0213 – fair signal from Outhouse, playing some blues, Sabbath, Bob Seger. Outhouse mentioned he left his AM transmitter up for 7 hours. I had the carrier here but audio was threshold at best.

WEAK Radio, 6930 USB, 0325 – tuned in to WEAK in progress, and this time the signal was weak. I did cath one clear ID, but that was about all I could pull out of the broadcast.

Check out these two totally awesome QSL’s received, one from Coyote Radio and the other from WHYP Shortwave! A big thank you, thank you very much goes out to Mr. Announcer and James Brownyard! Both of these are new pirate stations verified for me!

I just realized that I never scanned and posted my Channel Z and WREC QSL cards that I received last year! I will do that soon.

The Crystal Ship, 6876v AM, 2243 – tune in to female computer voice ID, 10 Years After, Steve Miller. Poor signal but slowly improving.

WBNY, 6950.55 AM, 2310 – Heard Paul Starr at tune in, throwing me off the track thinking this was M-A-C. A few minutes later I made out a WBNY ID. Weak signal so far.

Voice of KAOS, 6925 USB, *2326-2355* – Sign-on with “The Voice of KAOS is on the air!”

QSLs Many thanks to Thinking Man for QSLing this weekends broadcast with this interesting QSL, my 6′th from TMR. Also, many thanks to DJ from Radio Ga-Ga for this morse QSL. My email program corrupted the image file before I saved it to my hard drive, and DJ kindly sent a replacement. This is my 15′th Radio Ga-Ga QSL!

I still haven’t got a chance to pick up my QSLs from the mail drop. I’ll post the Channel Z QSL as soon as I get my hands on it..

WMPR, 6955v AM, 2257 – Good to fair signal, signifcant drifting. “WMPR” ID’s by male voice and “6-9-5-5 Worldwide” by female voice. All dance music.

WBNY, 6950.6v AM, 2320 – poor signal with a few fair peaks, tune in to Commander Bunny giving mail drop address is “special English”.

Radio Ga-Ga, 6925 USB, 2337 – weak signal, tune in to Donovan’s Mellow Yellow.

Slacking, but new QSLs arrived

I’ve really been slacking on DXing the pirates the last few weeks. I been spending most of my DX time lately on shortwave broadcast DX. But Elvis hasn’t left the building.

WBNY, 6924.7v AM, 0014-0035* – tough signal, lots of local electrical QRN. Signal drifting downwards the entire listening time. Beatles songs, Commander Bunny, “Ninety-nine” repeated often. Porky Pig’s “That’s All Folks” at 0034 UTC, WBNY news “theme music” and off.

Radio Ga-Ga, 6930 USB, *0022-0042* – weak signal with significant local QRN/ On with SSTV image then a bunch of dance-themed tunes: Let’s Dance, Let’s Do the Twist, Do The Locomotion, Macarena. 2 final SSTV images at 0039 and 0041 UTC, ID and off.

M-A-C Shortwave, 5850.8v AM, 0043 – transmitter on, MAC interval signal, time pips into the Paul Starr Show. Paul playing oldies such as Hang on Sloopy and Do Wah Diddy and a bunch of other oldies. “The Pirate’s Life For Me” song and off at 0136.

Voice of KAOS, 6925 USB, 0129 – weak signal, sounds like another station underneath. KAOS with log-on announcement, then Born To Be Wild, Wild Horses, Whole Lotta Love. KAOS mentiong a new QSL!

Outhouse Radio, 6930v USB, 0156 – generally a good signal, but alot of drifting from 6930.7 and down to right about 6930. Dirty Laundry, Let The Good Times Roll, Fly Like and Eagle, Rocket Man and more. Signal stabilized right above 6930 by the end of the broadcast.

Radio Station XXP, 6925 USB, *0219 – variable signal, but able to make out clear ID’s and the music. “Plundering the airwaves” ID’s, email, Jukebox Hero, Rare Earth, Led Zeppelin. Here is an audio clip of the sign-on.

WTCR, 6925 USB, 0249 – very nice signal with great audio! Sign on with 20′th Century Fox theme music, ID and then Whiskey Train by Procol Harum, Daydream by Robin Trower, then Joe Cocker, Earth Wind & Fire, Pretenders, Steely Dan.

WEAK Radio, 6930 USB, *0426-0626* – excellent signal, except for a long fade-out starting at 0505 UTC. An excellent broadcast ton of excellent music in this 2 hour marathon: Ben Harper, Led Zeppelin, Edwyn Collins, MC5, Sly & the Family Stone and tons more.

QSLs A hearty thank you to Dr. Morbius at WTCR for sending a paper QSL in the mail! A total surprise, it is always nice getting physical QSLs! I will post it as soon as I get my scanner hooked back up. Thank ya, Dr. Morbius!

An extremely fookin’ nice surprise was two awesome QSL’s from Captain Ganja for my reception of Radio Free Euphoria! I think that is my first bozo related QSL, lol! Thanks a ton Captain Ganja, Radio Free Euphoria is my ~~39′th~~ 40′th different pirate station QSL’d! (I realized tonight that I didn’t have my old WREC QSL from P.J. Sparx on the list, image coming soon!)

I unfortunately lost the contents of my inbox a few days ago, and lost a couple of QSLs before I saved them to disk. Emails being sent out asking for replacements…

My 13′th Radio Ga-Ga QSL was one that I lost on the day the inbox died. Many thanks to D.J. for re-sending it!

Happy Fathers Day to all you rabbit, monkey, rodent and subgenii schl0bs! Congratulation to Commander Bunny, surely the father of thousands of bunnies and millions of pellets! This honor puts my NASWA Pirate DXer award to shame.

In the July 2009 edition of Monitoring Times, Outer Limits column, written by George Zeller, “Commander Bunny’s clandestine station parody of the Rodent Revolution has evolved into perhaps the most influential pirate on the air today”

Outhouse Radio, 6925.1v USB, 1911 – tune in to Frampton Comes Alive with DO You Feel Like We Do then It Ain’t Me, Mexican Blackbird then ID at 1925 UTC.

WBNY, 6850.08 AM, 1950 – varying from carrier-only to threshold audio. Commander Bunny reported here, unable to confirm yet. Finally faded up at 2115 with M-A-C news announcement by Paul Starr announcing Commander Bunny for President. (audio clip)

UnID, 6925.2v AM, 0007 – very threshold signal, was able to identify song Johnny B Goode at 0019 UTC. Significant downward drift.

QSLs Radio Ga-Ga kindly verified last nights broadcast with a Lady Ga-Ga eQSL. Does this one fall into the “nudie cutie QSL” category? Thanks Radio Ga-Ga!

Pirate Radio Logs + QSLs – June 20-21, 2009

WBNY, 6925 kHz USB, 1930 – briefly fading up at 1930 with WBNY and Shock the Monkey talk over. Faded back up at 2050 UTC to good signal levels Commander Bunny for President, “All Hail Commander Bunny” then Commander Bunny reporting on the assassination attempt on his life, his resultant resurrection and insuring the Monkey Boys that he is not the anti-christ. Cows with Guns – Revolutionary Bovine Freedom song. Billy Wildebeest in the Land of the Gigantic Duck People – Billy the featherless Monkey having to face the fact that he is not a duck. C.R.A.P. – Citizens Requiring Acronym Purging. Show ended at 2144 UTC. This is the best signal I have had from WBNY, and a very enjoyable show indeed! (audio clip #1) (audio clip #2)

Outhouse Radio, 6925 USB, 2220 – tune in to Ventures Hawaii 5-0 theme, Outhouse Zone ID and Outhouse saying ‘this thing is hot” and he is out of here.

M-A-C Shortwave, 6850.82v AM, 0002 – Only threshold signal so far here at the Disgraceland listening post, noted at 0002 UTC with interval signal, time pips. Definite ID.

Radio Ga-Ga, 6925 USB, 0045 – SSTV image, morse code, songs included Mr Bon Scott singing Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Do Wah Diddy Diddy then final SSTV starting at 0056 UTC. ID and Op saying Happy Fathers day. and gone.

The Crystal Ship, 6876 AM, 0122 – unfortunately a poor signal all evening.

Sycko Radio, 6932.4v USB, 0224 – major Sycko craziness, talking about a strange record at 0226. Mentioning 6932 kHz and that this is a live broadcast. Talking about a new show on WBCQ, Radio Maine International, a collaboration with Jamba and Sycko. Good signal!

Radio Dismuke relay, 6925 USB, 0227 – mainly a poor signal being received here on bluffs of the Mississippi River. Professional sounding ID mentioning “tell your friends to listen” at 0253. Old big band music including Pat On The Back song at 0255 UTC as signal is strengthening to good levels. Old song Sleepy Time Down South at 0306, Mary Ann at 0309. No idea who was relaying this internet radio station.

Radio Bronco, 6925 USB, 0352 – received with very poor reception, tune in to a cowboy song ‘Ki Yi Yippie Yo”, another song or two the caught “This is Radio Bronco, this is Radio Bronco” ID at 0400 UTC. Interference from an unID station at 0402 until just after 0406 UTC, during which time Bronco was playing a song mentioning a “rider of”. Another song then perhaps gone or faded all the way down at 0410 UTC.

Outhouse Radio, 6930 USB, 0413 – great signal from 0413 UTC with lots of Ronnie Milsap including Daydreams, Smokey Mountain Rain, Theres No Gettin’ Over Me, Stranger In My House. Lengthy morse code, decoded by DimBulb on irc. This show was dedicated to Outhouse’s father who passed away earlier this year.

M-A-C Shortwave, 6924.7 AM, 0443 – Journey to the Centre of The Mind, M-A-C Shortwave’s Paul Star email address and goodbyes. Faded up to fair.

QSLs QSL’s were falling out of the inbox this morning! My 10′th WEAK Radio eQSL was received, a very nice Elvis stuffing his face with a sammich design. Radio Mushroom replied to my email reception report with a real atomic blast, and Voice of the Robots sent me a new design QSL for last nights encore show. This one has the correct date. They advise if I show both QSLs on invasion day, I will be allowed to oil their joints. Thanks guys!!

Radio Ga-Ga, 6925 kHz USB, 0207 – SSTV into vocals, Celebration, final SSTV and ID at 0225 then gone. Strong signal but equally strong local QRN.

The Crystal Ship, 6876 AM, 0239 – poor to fair signal, playing Dirty White Boy at tune in.

QSLs My Saulsbury mail drop agent has advised that I received a physical QSL from Dead Cat Radio today! Hah, one of my most wanted! I’ve not seen it yet, but I am told it features a cat paw print and some cat hair (fur ball?)! When I pick it up I, I will scan it and post an image. Thank you DCR!

Now if I can get M-A-C, Sycko, Jamba, Wolverine, WBNY, Wind Up and a few others to QSL…. then I would be that many steps closer to ruling the world!

Pirate Radio Logs + WTCR QSL – May 24-25, 2009

Unid, 6925 USB, 1545 – a SSTV image was decoded this morning from an unidentified station at 1545 UTC. This same SSTV was also received much more poorly last night at 0306 UTC mixing with WTCR’s sign.

Radio Ga-Ga, 6925 USB, 2329 – SSTV image, I Did It My Way, Brick House. Noisy signal but improving, ending with another SSTV image. Both images displayed here.

WBNY, 6850 AM, 2353 – received with a very weak signal with high static levels, I Shot The Sheriff parody. An unidentified station came on the air on 6850.8v AM, likely M-A-C Shortwave which caused quite a het. A “I Do Solemnly Swear” comedy skit at 0021, ID.

Dead Cat Radio, 6925 USB, 0103 – patriotic instrumental songs, Star Spangled Banner, Amazing Grace, God Bless America, etc. Off at 0117 with ID.

Northwoods Radio, 6925 USB, 0120 – ID, yahoo email, a few songs I didn’t know, Drunk Tonight by the Bloody Irish Boys at 0134, more songs.

Toynbee Radio, 6925 USB, 0155 – good signal, Death from above, below, polar shift, 2012, and no more milking! But my cookies?! Good signal. Also heard at 0136 during Northwoods broadcast. What is Toynbee you may ask? Here you go.

Barnyard Radio, 6930 USB, 0210 – variable signal tonight, perhaps a live broadcast. Caught them at sing-on when they were super loud, but failed to note the time.

Dead Cat Radio, 6925 USB, 0219 – started off with cajun sounding music then moved so a bunch of back to back Michelle Branch songs. ID then SSTV at 0242:

Liquid Radio (presumed), 6925.38 AM, 0244 – techno and spacey music, weak signal.

Radio Ga-Ga, 6925 USB, 0322 – SSTV Image

Dead Cat Radio, 6925 USB, 0405 – lots of songs back to back, ID at 0424 and gone.

Dead Cat Radio, 6925 USB, 0453 – DCR back with back to back Sarah Mclaughlin songs, ID at 0509 then gone.

Voice of Honor, 6925 USB, 0509 – the Voice of Honor with another broadcast of the Memorial Day special honoring the U.S. Armed Forces.

Wolverine Radio, 6925 USB, 0541 – four back to back versions of the song I Fought The Law, only the third one I was familiar with: the Clash version. 0551 UTC brief announcement by man. Thanks to Sealord on FRN deciphering the decoded message, it was Wolverine Radio ID in reverse!

QSLs A verie nice QSL recieved from WTCR’s Dr. Morbius for last nights broadcast on 6,295 kHz USB. I had mailed off a report to the Belfast drop just before this arrived. Thank you Dr. Morbius!
